STEM Awareness Week Mon. 6/3 to Sat. 6/8

THE DIVISION OF STEM PROGRAMS LAUNCHES 2nd ANNUAL STEM AWARENESS WEEK!

WHAT: The School District of Philadelphia’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Programs Division is hosting its 2nd Annual week of STEM Awareness from June 3rd - June 8th, 2013. Students from various schools throughout the District will showcase their STEM talent in effort to raise awareness and support for current and future initiatives. The goal is to encourage a community of STEM professionals and advocates to work towards the common goal of post-secondary success for all of the School District of Philadelphia students. 


Below is a list of events that will take place during STEM Awareness Week: 

Imagine Your STEM Future - Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania
Monday, June 3rd, 2013 from 12pm. to 3pm.
The School District of Philadelphia - 440 North Broad Street, Philadelphia PA 19130 

Female students interested in STEM will have the opportunity to participate in the Imagine Your STEM Future Program hosted by the Girl Scouts of Eastern PA. Students in grades 9th through 12th will have the opportunity to clean up an oil spill, design their own fountain, and delve in to environmental science challenges. 

Lunch with the Deans
Tuesday, June 4th, 2013 from 11am.-1pm.
The School District of Philadelphia - 440 North Broad St. Philadelphia, PA 19130

Students in grades 9th through 11th from District and charter schools who are interested in pursuing higher education in the STEM fields will have an opportunity to participate in a panel discussion about STEM programs in the region. They will also have the opportunity to ask the Deans questions pertaining to their respective colleges and universities. We would like to encourage students to become more comfortable with STEM post-secondary education by creating an opportunity for them to interact with the managers of these programs. Deans from the following colleges & universities will be present:

Community College of Philadelphia
University of Delaware
LaSalle University
University of Pennsylvania
Temple University
Villanova University
Philadelphia University

Junior Music Executive Concert 
Tuesday, June 4th, 2013 from 9am-11am 
Benjamin Franklin High School (Auditorium)

High school students that have successfully completed the eight-week Junior Music Executive Program will produce a concert as their final project. Students learned valuable business skills and effective use of technology related to the entertainment industry, and they will put these skills to use as production managers.

STEM Appreciation Night – in Partnership with The Franklin Institute
Wednesday, June 5th, 2013 from 4pm.-7pm.
The Franklin Institute

High school students will be honored for their excellence within STEM with a tour of the Franklin Institute followed by an awards ceremony, awarding the hard work and dedication of those students who have excelled in STEM. 

Design Day – in Partnership with PhilaNOMA
Friday, June 7th, 2013 from 3pm.–5pm.
The Constitution Center

Students from Dr. Ethel Allen Promise Academy will participate in a design & build workshop, facilitated by the Philadelphia chapter of the Nation Organization of Minority Architects (PhilaNOMA).  Students will work in teams to tackle a real-world design challenge, and present their final design to panel of professionals.

RoboMANIA
Saturday, June 8th, 2013 from 10am -2pm
West Philadelphia High School 

This will be the District’s ultimate gathering of Robotics mentors, companies, organizations, and programs. The community, educators, employees and the District students will have the opportunity to interact with the different platforms, as well as learn how they can help support and become a part of the growing initiatives. Outstanding member of the year’s Robotics teams will be honored in an award ceremony.
