Team wins awards in Portland, Oregon for MESA Prosthetic Arm Competition

Congratulations to the HSES students who competed in the MESA regional and national Prosthetic Arm Challenge competitions: Angelica Overton, Jesus Davaloz, Teacher Scott Koehler, George Baidoo, Antonio Williams, Sam Liu, Tysheara Hill and Cevan Noell.  The HSES team won the Pennsylvania MESA competition at Temple University in May, then moved on to the National MESA competition in Portland, Oregon from June 21- 23rd, 2013.  Detailed results will be posted soon.

The HSES team participated during class and after-school Robotics club regularly throughout the year. All teams researched, designed, built, tested, and competed using a prosthetic device designed to mimic the movement of the wrist, hand and fingers. Device performance was judged as it relates to these competition tasks:
  • Distance Accuracy Relay: greatest distance and accuracy achieved by tossing balls of three different sizes into target containers located at three different distances.
  • Object Relocation Task: greatest mass-to-time ratio achieved by placing objects of varying weight into the specified container.
  • Dexterity Task: greatest number of bolts and nuts correctly placed and secured onto the testing device.
  • Design efficiency: greatest ratio of device performance to device mass.
Teams also produced a technical paper, oral presentation, and academic display in support of their project. Their technical paper detailed their design process, experimentation with the device, and their understanding of the engineering concepts. Student teams presented their work and academic displays to a panel of STEM professionals who judged their presentation and challenge each team further with follow-up questions.   Many thanks to Dr. Jamie Bracey with PA MESA and Temple University, HSES staff including Principal Ahmed, Dr. Basu, Mr. Thompson and Ms. Swift, and NAVSEA engineering mentors.
